Stocks Finish Mixed After Portugal Debt Downgrade

The passage of Greece's austerity plan and stronger-than-expected U.S. manufacturing data had helped stocks finish Friday with the best weekly performance in two years. But Wall Street proved unable to maintain last week's momentum as Moody's lowered Portugal's debt rating to junk status and data on factory orders came in shy of economist expectations. "It feels like the markets are in a sideways pattern," said Ralph Fogel, investment strategist at Fogel Neale Partners. "We're in an area of congestion." European banks are set to gather on Wednesday for further discussion of Greece's debt situation, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The meeting will also bring together private creditors, who may take down losses as part of a rescue plan. Separately, the finance ministers of France and Germany will also meet on the issue. Standard & Poor's has said it will consider Greece in default if it rolls over its debt. On the domestic front, a 0.8% rise in factory orders for May did little to lift stocks as it was slightly below consensus expectations for a 1% increase, although it did represent improvement from the 0.9% drop in orders for April. Trading volume was low, with 3.3 billion shares changing hands on the New York Stock Exchange, and 1.5 billion shares trading on the Nasdaq. About 40% of shares on the NYSE advanced, while 60% declined. Friday's jobs report is expected to loom over trading during this holiday-shortened week, as will the ongoing drama in Washington, D.C. over the U.S. deficit situation as the Aug. 2 deadline to lift the debt ceiling creeps closer.

I agree with Vergina and Kimon. In my experience, a lot of younger Greeks are not willing to take a job that they consider "below them". I don’t want to suggest you are one of those – but I encourage you to accept any job you can get, no matter how over-qualified you may be.

Think about it this way. If you were emigrating to another country (like so many Greeks are thinking of doing these days), what jobs would you accept in the new place? All of them. You wouldn’t have a choice. It should be the same at home.
