Across the fences, neighbours have more heavily planted properties and the 'borrowed' greenery adds to the outlook. "It's spectacular in summer," Renee notes.
That greenery also brings in the birdlife, although the large kauri and puriri trees on the footpath boundary also draw plenty of feathered attention, Renee says. "The wood pigeons are in there all the time."
In summer, Renee and Kathy move the outdoor table setting down to the paving around the swimming pool that sits at the end of the section. There's a roll-out cover for the pool, and Renee reports temperatures as high as 30 degrees in the water at the height of the summer season.

Almost all swimming pools built within the last 35 years have a coat of plaster (marcite) for appearance, and to avoid the roughness inherit in concrete or gunite.
