Bobwhite brigade: Students learn how to be wildlife management leaders

CAMPBELLTON — Of all the creatures that walk, crawl or fly over Texas, perhaps the one that could use the most outside assistance to survive is the bobwhite quail.

With a natural mortality rate of about 70 percent and an average life span of about eight months, the popular game birds will be gaining some hefty support from about 30 high school students who participated at a South Texas Bobwhite Brigade this week at the 74 Ranch Resort near Campbellton, about 15 miles south of Pleasanton.

“This is an intensive wildlife leadership camp where we teach them all aspects of wildlife management,” said Dayna Prochaska, one of the co-coordinators of the five-day training session. “We use quail as a tool to develop their understanding of the outdoors and what is important to maintain our natural resources. There are kids from the country and from the inner city, some of whom have never experienced the outdoors.

“This is a great introduction for our future leaders,” added Prochaska, who started out as a brigade cadet in 1995 and now serves as a coordinator at the camps conducted across the state each year.

The brigades are designed to provide high school students with instruction in areas such as habitat conservation, land stewardship, teambuilding, communication and leadership in an effort to develop ambassadors for conservation.

Dr. Dale Rollins, extension wildlife specialist with Texas Cooperative Extension, is credited with creating the brigades as a way to expand the extension’s educational efforts. Cooperating partners include Texas AgriLife Extension, Texas Wildlife Association, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and the Texas Wildlife Association Foundation. The Texas Brigades program is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Dennis Kelley, the 74 Ranch camp’s co-coordinator, said everything — from wildlife and habitat management to a little shotgun instruction at the ranch’s 16-station sporting clays course — is designed to provide the youngsters with a wealth of information to take back to their communities.

“We have been coming to the 74 Ranch for the past 10 years because it is such a wonderful facility and they give us free range of the whole ranch,” Kelley said. “It is not unusual for us to keep the kids up until midnight and then have them in formation at 6:45 a.m. Everything is very competitive — very intense.
