Ten stations in KC area will give electric cars a charge

Kansas City Power & Light will have 10 electric vehicle chargers in place across the metro area by the end of the summer, the utility said Friday.</p><p>The locations range from an upscale shopping center in Leawood to the Harley-Davidson motorcycle factory in Kansas City north of the river. </p><p>This region won&#x92;t be the first to get electric cars, as the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf are being marketed initially in other statess such as California and Texas. But the Volt is expected to be sold here later this year and the Leaf early in 2012.</p><p>The chargers announced Friday will be available to the public and will offer free electricity until the end of 2013. Though many more will be needed eventually, the first ones will be important as a field test. Their use also should help indicate where to install more.</p><p>Will an electric-car owner, while shopping for a couple of hours. use a charger to top off the battery? Or will employees take advantage of ones at workplaces, which would allow the six hours needed for a full charge? How people use the first batch of chargers should answer such questions.</p><p>&#x93;What is exciting is we&#x92;re catching up with the future today,&#x94; said Kelly Gilbert, director of Clean Cities, a federal program being managed by the Metropolitan Energy Center.</p><p>Gilbert approached KCP&L in 2009 about installing the chargers. The utility agreed to invest $150,000, which is being combined with $150,000 in federal economic stimulus funds. </p><p>Such green projects have been strongly backed by the Obama administration and have received some bipartisan support.</p><p>Lt. Gov. Jeff Coyler of Kansas, a Republican, made an appearance Thursday at Black & Veatch headquarters for the announcement of the charger locations.</p><p>&#x93;This is a great day,&#x94; he said. &#x93;The sun is just starting to shine on this technology.&#x94;</p><p>It&#x92;s unclear how quickly the public charger infrastructure will be developed &#x97; or needed. But Roland Mailwat, KCP&L&#x92;s manager of sustainability products, said a step was taken Friday toward helping the region adopt cutting-edge technology.</p><p>Electric car owners are expected to rely mainly on charging their vehicles at home, but a network of public charging stations will be important too. For one thing, they could calm fears about being caught out with a depleted battery. </p><p>That is less of an issue with the Volt since it has a backup gasoline generator, but the Leaf is totally electric.</p><p>The 10 locations in the utility&#x92;s service territory were picked to cover a broad area and different types of places, from retail to hospitals.</p><p>Black & Veatch in Overland Park will be the site of one of the chargers, and officials at the engineering firm say they&#x92;re needed if electric vehicles are to become popular. </p><p>&#x93;You&#x92;ve got to have the charging station or they won&#x92;t be comfortable buying the cars,&#x94; said Jim Lewis, chief administrative officer of the engineering firm. </p><p>Union Station is getting a charger, as is Heartland Hospital up north in St. Joseph. Johnson County Community College and the Park Place Village shopping center in Leawood are each getting two chargers. </p><p>LilyPad EV is selling the chargers, manufactured by Coulomb Electric. Each one can charge two vehicles at a time and take four to six hours to fully charge a Nissan Leaf, which has a range of up to 100 miles. </p><p>Some cities in other regions have chosen more than one vendor for the chargers so that more than one type can be tested, but KCP&L said it preferred to have consistency among those deployed in this area. They will join about five chargers already installed in the area by businesses and others, although not all of those are available to the public. </p><p>KCP&L, in a separate plan to improve the grid in midtown Kansas City, will install another 10 chargers, possibly starting later this year. </p><p><strong><span class="infobox-head">The sites </span></strong></p><p>Black & Veatch, 11401 Lamar Ave.</p><p>Lee&#x92;s Summit City Hall, 220 SE Green St.</p><p>Commerce Bank, 135th and State Line, Kansas City </p><p>Harley-Davidson plant, 11401 N.
