Getting an early start

As a little girl, Sara Jean Griffin shared the same aspirations as many other 3-year-old girls she wanted to be a princess. Fourteen years later, she has arrived.

“I think I have the best job in the world,” Griffin, 18, said of the business she started last year called Once Upon A Time Princess Parties. The St. Leonard native, who graduated from Calvert High School in May, decided to get a head start on her career. She makes her own princess costumes by altering parts she orders online, dons the self-made dresses and wears them to entertain at preschool-aged girls’ birthday parties.

Next spring she plans to attend the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Fla.

“What I’d really like to do with my life is work with kids and do children’s theater. Ultimately I really want to be a Disney princess at Disney World,” she said.

Inching closer to her goal with the launch of Once Upon A Time Princess Parties, Griffin is one of several Southern Maryland business-minded teens who already have their own businesses doing what they love most.

Wishing upon a star, making it happen

Griffin said she loves making little girls smile.

“I wanted to do something where I could work with children and sort of practice what I want to do in the long run. If I can’t get to Disney yet, why not bring Disney to me?” she said.
