Hockanum River Canoe & Kayak Race Draws a Crowd - Tolland, CT Patch
More than 130 canoes and kayaks took part in the Hockanum River Canoe & Kayak Race Sunday, a fundraiser to benefit the river and the committee that maintains the trails along it.
At $10 per paddler, and some boats carrying two people, the race raised a pretty penny for the Hockanum River Linear Park Committee, which was one of the sponsors of the event. The race’s other sponsors were the Eighth District Fire Department, the Manchester Conservation Commission and the Bears Amateur Radio Club.
The race began in the parking lot behind the Motel 6 on Route 83 in Vernon and ended at a shopping plaza on Burnside Avenue in East Hartford. Dozens and dozens of family members and friends watched from the banks of the river as more than a few paddlers lost it and plunged into the frigid waters of the Hockanum River, although almost all seemed to be having a good time.
