Summer at the Lake

Draw a line from Akron, Ohio to Springfield, Illinois and if you grew up north of that line there is a good chance that you spent a summer vacation “at the lake”. Might have been in Northern Wisconsin, perhaps up in Minnesota, or here in Michigan. The differences are slight, the similarities endless. A week (two if you were very lucky) in a cabin, next to the water, with a well worn sand path, perfect for bare feet, that lead from the cabin door to the lake.

There is a special magic about these places that sticks with you all your life. The smell of the inside of the cabin, built of pine, rough hewn and shiny with lacquer. Air conditioning came courtesy of screen windows and Mother Nature, and it made the inside and outside more intertwined than anywhere else.

The screen door, wooden framed with turn-screw cross braces and spring closures, withstood a hundred slams a day as kids ran in and out tracking sand across the floor. Here you could get away with it, Mom had downshifted and the normal household rules got suspended. Even a wet and sandy dog got special dispensation at the cabin.

Rock bass, perch and sunfish were easy pickings from the end of the pier, and an especially big fish would get run up to the cabin for all to see. Uncounted numbers of children got their first turns at the oars here, learning how to row in shallow water where a tipped over boat meant nothing more than a refreshing dip. Older siblings were allowed more freedom, and they rowed out beyond the point where the bottom slid away into the blue depths.

As evening fell, a campfire near the lake was the gathering spot, adults in wooden chairs relaxing with the littlest ones falling asleep on their laps, while bigger kids poked at the fire or roasted marshmallows. Eventually the kids got tucked into bunks, the sounds of the night woods and the lowered voices of the grown ups around the fire a lullaby that carried tired youngsters away to dreamland.

I was reminded of all this on a recent trip to Northern Michigan. It had been a great many years since I had ventured north in the summer months. More often I’m headed there for a late fall fishing trip, or in the deep of winter in pursuit of walleyes or perch through the ice. This time however I was after smallmouth bass, and an early summer weekend fishing Lake Charlevoix was just the ticket.

As we made the 4 hour drive north, I was struck by the incredible green of our north woods.

I know that the hookah air supply uses an air compressor to pump air, but can you actually run out of air like scuba ?

If there is a failure with the compressor system such as a loss of power on electric compressors or running out of fuel for fuel powered compressors then, yes, you would run out of air. The air that is being pumped down to the diver using a hookah system is drawn into the compressor intake which not only compresses the air but also pulls moisture, particulate matter and bad gasses out of the air before it is delivered to the diver.
