Vietnam vets reunite

Nearly 100 veterans of the Vietnam War gathered Monday afternoon at the Woodhaven Restaurant for a reunion sponsored by Bob Ashley, an Army veteran of the war and the owner of the restaurant.

“This isn’t supposed to be a time for everyone to share war stories and talk about the bad things that happened,” Ashley said. “It’s a time to see old friends and remember some of the good things, and the funny incidents that happened.”

There was no formal program, and the veterans spent most of the evening sharing conversations in small groups.

Ashley, in welcoming the veterans, said, “I appreciate the fact that you came tonight so we could see each other and visit. I think all of us have wanted to talk about what happened to us, but we were hesitant. Now we have the chance.”

Pat McNeil, the commander of the Blue Ridge Mountain Post 1142 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars who was assigned to an Army artillery unit in Vietnam, said “I don’t know how you say thanks to a person like Bob who does as much as he does for the veterans of this community (Ashley offers free meals to veterans at the Coffee House restaurants each Veterans Day). We have decided to give him a life-time membership to the VFW Post.”

Ashley spoke briefly about how the Vietnam veterans were treated when they returned from their tour of duty. Anti-war protesters spit on returning veterans and called them “baby killers” at West Coast airports.

“We’re no different from any other veterans,” he said. “We just didn’t get treated the same when we got home.

“People didn’t accept us back here as soldiers. I don’t know what they thought we were. We were only doing what we were told to do. We were the same as every other soldier in every other war.”

Randy Powell, an Army medic who served in central South Vietnam for 13 months, said, “I’ve seen a lot of people I know here tonight, but I didn’t know they served in Vietnam. The war just isn’t something you talk about. Bob is a great citizen for doing this, and for being so kind to all of the veterans.”

Craig Freas, an Army veteran, said, “it’s good to see these other guys and to have the chance to talk. If you have any demons left over from the war, it helps to get rid of them to do something like this and just enjoy ourselves.

“It’s like Bob said...we did what our country asked us to do. After all these years, we’re getting the recognition for what we did and we can be proud to finally feel like people appreciate what we did, even if they don’t agree with why we were in the war.
