Four Slidell Girl Scouts receive Gold Award
Each recipient was required to create and implement a sustainable and ongoing community service project that demonstrated her leadership and planning abilities, while promoting positive values, personal and spiritual growth, and community service. A minimum of 135 hours were required for the seven steps of the Gold Award process.
The presentation ceremony was preceded by a cake-and-punch reception for each of the girls and their guests. Displays with the Gold Award recipients’ projects were available for viewing.
Officials from Girl Scout Louisiana East were present and conducted the opening ceremony and made congratulatory remarks. Each girl come forward with her leader, mother or Gold Award Adviser for the Pinning Ceremony. The award recipients were given the opportunity to put into words what Girl Scouting had meant to them.
Of the 10 girls honored from throughout Louisiana, four were from Slidell.
Katheryn “Katy” Lloyd, a 12-year Girl Scout, is the daughter of Wendi and “Buddy” Lloyd and was a member of Slidell Troop 864. She is a 2010 Pope John Paul II High School graduate and attends Louisiana State University, majoring in elementary education. Lloyd’s project was to develop a new Patch Program for Scouts by introducing them to the rich history and cultural attractions that are available in St. Tammany Parish. Her project adviser was Judy DeLucca.
Rachel Pickering, an 11-year Girl Scout, is the daughter of Clara Lee and Bill Pickering and was a member of Slidell Troop 63. She is a 2010 graduate of Northshore High School and attends Texas A&M, majoring in pre-K through 6th grade elementary education. Pickering’s project was called Fleur de Boutique. She reorganized new and gently used clothing to create a special shopping “boutique” for the girls at K Bar B Ranch. Accessories such as jewelry, belts, cosmetics and other items also were organized and set up as a token store to reward positive behavior. Because the girls are under the supervision of the state, this allowed them a place to shop. Her project adviser was Donna Arostegui.
LeAnna Kent, an 11-year Girl Scout, is the daughter of Lynn and Chris Kent and was a member of Slidell Troop 63. Kent, also a 2010 Northshore High School graduate, attends Rhodes College, majoring in mathematics. Her project was to replace aging benches used in the mess hall and unit houses of Girl Scout Camp Whispering Pines. With the help of her adviser, John Cousins, Kent was able to build new benches that are expected to last for a long time.
