Tyl retires from coaching Blue Devils after 17 years
Tyl recently decided to step away from the coaching ranks to spend more time with family after racking up more than 200 career victories as a head coach who guided teams in two different varsity sports.
In 1994, WHHS principal Mike Tucker asked Tyl to fire up a girls soccer program at the school after she had enjoyed much success sharing her talents in the Auburndale soccer league. And before she could catch her breath, the girls tennis reins were handed to her.
"I started the program. I was playing competitive soccer and was instrumental in starting the Auburndale soccer league. I was coach, referee, everything," Tyl said. "Mike Tucker asked me to coach the team."
Outside of nets being strung and hung to metal poles, soccer and tennis don't have a lot in common, until Tyl started using the tennis players to fill out the first Winter Haven soccer roster.
"We only had, like, 12 or 13 players on the soccer team that first year. Four of those players played tennis for me. So I recruited them to play soccer," Tyl said.
But here's the surprising part. The Blue Devils won right away, posting a 12-2 record and finishing as district runner-up. The next season (1995-96), Tyl's team finished as district runner-up again and then broke through to take the district championship the following season. The next two seasons they captured two more district runner-up titles.
"Our team was not expected to be competitive and we were extremely competitive. We never got blown out, and there was never anything that broke the girls' spirits," Tyl said.
During her soccer years, Winter Haven won three county championships and amassed a 74-21-13 record.
Tyl's tennis teams won immediately, too. The 1996 squad, anchored by her stepdaughter Leslee Bennett-Diaz, posted an 11-2 record and captured both the district and county titles, before winning four games at the state tournament, including two singles and two doubles matches.
"I had never coached tennis and I was just going to fill in for a while for the coach who was retiring," Tyl said.
But after a few seasons Tyl decided to coach only tennis.
"Soccer is an awful lot of time and then (it's) just back-to-back with the seasons. You finish your soccer district and then you start your tennis, so I had to give up one of them," Tyl said.
During the tennis years, Tyl's teams ran up a lofty 142-53 record, including a return to the state tournament this past season with county player of the year Abby Martinez. The team won four more matches at the state tournament with Martinez picking up a singles win and three doubles wins with her teammate Meredith Mancini.
