Using today's tech to make ancient words easy

It’s not hard to find words in the Bible that twist your tongue. Biblical names like Epaenetus and Nergalsharezer can leave any Bible reader perplexed and frustrated.

Waldorf residents Michael Vance and his wife, Haleigh Vance, have a remedy in Bible Audio Pronunciations, an iPhone application that pronounces more than 1,000 difficult Bible words.

The couple developed the app, which launched June 14, mainly to provide a pronunciation guide previously unavailable on iPhones.

“We wanted to give people an easy tool to raise their level of understanding and enjoyment from reading the Bible,” Michael Vance said in a press release. “This app will speak out loud some of its most difficult words.”

Vance said some of the words are familiar to Bible readers, but most are difficult to pronounce.

Epaenetus, who appears in Romans 16:5, is pronounced ee-PEE-nee-tuhs.

Nergalsharezer, Jeremiah 39:3, is pronounced nuhr'gal-shar-EE-zuhr.

Words are arranged alphabetically, allowing for easy browsing and searching, Vance said.

The app, which costs 99 cents, provides direct links to Google and Wikipedia that provide additional background information on the Bible words.

There is also a Bible Audio Pronunciations Lite version that is free, but only has about 100 Bible words.

Notable Christian history figures, such as St. Thomas Aquinas, are also in the iPhone applications.

Haleigh Vance said that she found herself skipping over words in the Bible she could not pronounce, which is why the couple developed the app.

The family attends the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, White Plains Second Ward, located off Padgett Road.

Michael Vance said the app does not include words from the Book of Mormon, which LDS congregations read in addition to the Bible.

Instead, the Bible words come primarily from the King James Version, Vance said.

The couple developed the iPhone app through the website Elance.com, which connects freelance contractors to people interested in developing projects. Programming and graphic design services for the app came through the website.

“The beauty of this particular model is that you can envision what you want to do, write a storyboard and then have a developer make it,” Michael Vance said.

Vance recorded his voice for the pronunciations and consulted online sources and other pronunciation guides as part of his research.

God’s Pure Language of Numbers

God’s Pure Language of Numbers

In the end time prophecy of Zephaniah, it is written: I said, Surely thou shalt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction…  Therefore wait ye upon me saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.  For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.   Zephaniah 3: 7-9.  This passage of Scripture has been translated in a variety of ways.  It is clear that the prophecy is related to a time when God intends to pour out His indignation and fierce anger upon the earth because of iniquity.  Is the “pure language” which is mentioned in verse 9 a pure speech of the people who have returned to God, or is it a pure language of God that will be revealed so that all will know the truth and return to the Lord?

There has been much speculation concerning a “Bible code” which has been exploited in recent literature and movies. Could there actually be a code, a pure language, which reveals hidden truth in Scripture and proves Biblical inerrancy?  About 1600 years ago St. Augustine wrote:  Ignorance of numbers, too, prevents us from understanding things that are set down in Scripture in a figurative and mystical way. (Augustine, Saint, On Christian Doctrine – Book II Chapter 16 Available [Online] www.ccel.org/ccel/augustine/doctrine.iv.iii.html )  Is the pure language a language of numbers?  Gematria involves the use of the numerical value of words to study Biblical text in an attempt to find hidden truth.  This is possible, since Hebrew and Greek, the languages of the Old Testament and New Testament, respectively, both use the characters of the alphabet as numerals.  As a result each letter and therefore each word has a specific numerical value in addition to a specific meaning. The following are the gematria values for the Hebrew and Greek alphabets.
