Like a party in Paris for Bastille Day

"The president always leads the parade, complete with music and plenty of pomp and circumstance," Greenspan says. "The French are masters at this, and there's something thrilling about seeing the streets lined with people and so many little children perched on their parents' shoulders to catch a glimpse of the march. There'll be fireworks over the Eiffel Tower at night and picnics everywhere across the city from morning to dawn.

"And, as always, there'll be a flyover along the Seine, something my husband looks forward to. But here's the part I like: the dinner that we'll be serving at home for friends, and the Firemen's Ball that we'll go to the night before. Since the firemen in each arrondissement organize their own balls, it's a community event and another celebration that makes Paris, as grand as it is, feel like a village."

Greenspan's latest cookbook, "Around My French Table" (Houghton Mifflin, $40), recently was named cookbook of the year by the International Association of Culinary Professionals. The beautiful book is filled with stories of her life in France and recipes for the food she prepares at her home in Paris. It's filled with dishes garnered from her French friends and favorite bistros.

The salad is hearty enough to be the main course at a summertime lunch, but for a dinner menu, Greenspan suggests augmenting the menu with a fish entrée, Swordfish with Frilly Herb Salad. The fish marinates in a citrusy mixture, then is pan-seared long enough to completely cook it. It's topped with warmed marinade and a crown of crisp herb-centric salad.

But if you're hankering for a different dessert, you might consider having a look at Greenspan's newest project, the "Baking With Dorie" app that is due out in a few weeks. The groundbreaking app includes step-by-step videos for each recipe, with options for the viewer to skip steps as they become comfortable with specific techniques. It will be available at the iTunes app store.

I am unapologetic in my love of France. No tattoos adorn my body, but I suspect that a royal-blue fleur-de-lis insignia is branded on the surface of my heart. My time spent in Paris has fostered treasured memories, and that includes the revelry of Bastille Day celebrations.

Every July 14, France celebrates Bastille Day, which marks the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789. It was the first major event of the French Revolution, and Paris celebrates with parades, fireworks, dancing in the streets and great food.

Select fresh fruit such as strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries. Wash, drain, and cut into bite size pieces, if needed.  Make granola .  Layer bottom of pan or individual serving dish with granola and pat down to form a loose crust.  Add a layer of fruit. Sprinkle with a layer of granola. Before serving, finish with a spoonful of sour cream and honey topping which is made by mixing one cup of sour cream and 1-2 tablespoons of honey.
