South Carolina claims national championship

OMAHA, NEB. — Ray Tanner sat at a podium a full year ago with several of his South Carolina players, all donning national championship gear.

Tanner, who had just guided the Gamecock baseball program to their first national title, was asked then about getting back to Omaha, Neb., the next year and doing it all over again.

“Are you kidding me?” he replied to the question.

No one’s joking now.

Tanner and the Gamecocks bolstered themselves into history Tuesday, becoming the sixth team to go back-to-back in Omaha with a 5-2 victory over Florida to win the national championship.

“It’s really difficult to put into words what we’ve experienced,” Tanner said. “It’s hard to win it the first time and then you get a chance to get back out here. We played extremely well and we won it again. It’s hard to understand.”

It was another unlikely run for USC (55-14), which downed the favored Gators (53-19) 2-0 in an all-SEC East CWS final.

USC also set the record for consecutive for NCAA tournament wins with 16 — including a perfect 10-0 this postseason and 5-0 in the CWS.

“We’re in the history books now,” ace pitcher Michael Roth said.

And after three of USC’s first four wins in Omaha were decided by one run this cardiac group didn’t need dramatics this time — or like last year when Whit Merrifield hit a walk-off winner.

“I feel like we deserved that, the way we’ve been playing, the way we’ve been working hard,” Christian Walker said. “I didn’t expect it to go any other way.”

South Carolina scored three runs in the third inning — and it seemed like plenty more as the champs rode the effective — and tired — arm of ace Michael Roth, who came off three days rest to allow two runs on five hits through 7 2/3 innings to add to his postseason legacy.

Walker, who’s played with a fractured wrist, and T.L. Hanna product Thomas, who played with a severe foot injury, had two hits each. Thomas also had an RBI, Scott Wingo drove in a pair and Peter Mooney hit USC’s only home run of its CWS in the sixth.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Wingo, the CWS’ Most Outstanding Player. “To go back-to-back, I just had a little feeling coming into this year we were going to do what Oregon State did.”

The Gamecock bullpen did what it’s done all season, keeping the Gators at bay the last two innings as Matt Price worked a perfect and final 1 1/3 innings for his 20 save of the season to end up on the bottom of another championship dogpile.
