“You can’t be afraid to win, especially when you just get there. It’s habitual, and it’s something that I think could hopefully be habitual for this club in the near future.”

Barney – a fourth-round pick in the 2007 draft – has become a talking point for the player-development model the Ricketts family and Jim Hendry’s front office are trying to create.

“He plays to win every day,” bench coach Pat Listach said. “(He) watches a lot of video tape. He watches opposition. He watches himself. He watches how they’re getting him out, how they’re pitching him. He’s a student of the game.”
