Air France Pilot's Union Approves Provincial Base Project
PARIS -( Dow Jones )- Members of the main pilots' union at French carrier Air France have voted to approve a plan by the airlines to compete with low-cost airlines by setting up provincial bases in France.
The project aims to reduce unit costs by 15% and 30% in manageable costs by having pilots operating on medium-haul routes based in outlying French cities as well as at Air France's hub at Paris. The move would increase pilot availability and aircraft utilization. The first base will be created at Marseille, on France's south coast, later this year, and others will follow in Nice and Toulouse.
A spokesman for Air France, one of the two pillars of the Air France-KLM (AF.FR) group, said 54.7% of the pilots of the SNPL union have voted to approve the project. "Air France welcomes this result and the new growth dynamic that will result," the spokesman said.
