Say what you want, but umbrella rigs do trick

They are heavy and cumbersome and many folks don't like to catch more than one fish at a time. These rigs are catching three, four or five fish at once and some weigh in the teens.

Pro guide Billy Murphy, of Augusta, loves umbrella rigs. Over the years, he has developed many techniques in using the rigs. Consistent trolling speed means your boat must be equipped with a tachometer and Murphy likes to keep moving at 800 r.p.m.

The rig runs 120 feet behind the boat and the speed allows them to run at a depth of 20 feet. He trolls over humps and around points and drop-offs in 25 to 30 feet of water. Get shallower and you'll lose a rig, which is not inexpensive.

There are plenty of Murphy's tips to be found on his Web site at www.doubletroublefishing guides.com .

Raysville Marina (Leon Buffington and Doug Pentecost), (706) 595-5582 -- Jesse Dawson, of Warrenton, Ga., caught a nice mess of crappies in the Raysville area. Largest was a 2-pounder. Gary and Brenda Hardy caught 42 shellcrackers and bream. Tony and Leonard McZilkey, of Evans, caught 13 crappies and a largemouth bass in the fish house.

(803) 637-6379 (www.crockett rocketstriperfishing.com ) -- Water temperature is 84 degrees and the lake is mostly clear. Fishing is hotter than a firecracker on the Fourth of July. We're having to hide from the fish so we have time to re-bait the hooks! The following folks will testify that this statement is true. Everyone is catching a limit faster than you can say "pass the peas." George Bertram, of Savannah Lakes Village and his friend, Corey Belkov, from Virginia Beach, Va.; Mike Graziano, Jack Linder, Lex and Kim Elkins, the Rev. Buddy Meyers, his grandson, Nick, Oscar Ribonson and Tyrell Kitchens, Tom Allgood, fishing with his daughter, Courtney, and Hammond West, Bettis Hammond and Bull Hammond, who gave everyone a fishing lesson. We're looking for good fishing to continue and the oxygen system seems to be working very well. My baits are living are living testament to that.

Warm weather good for catching bass | The Augusta Chronicle

January and February fishing on Thurmond Lake for largemouth bass, striped bass and hybrid bass can be red-hot or terrible, depending upon weather conditions. I particularly like the Raysville area, especially if we have a warming trend that will push water temperatures in the low 40s into the high 40s or low 50s, even if it's for just a short time.

The birds -- sea gulls and terns -- are the keys to locating schooling fish this time of the year. I prefer to use the white ice Zoom Super Fluke attached to a quarter-ounce jig head. It's easy to cast and even better, it's easier to get the hook out of the fish so that I can quickly cast into the school again.

Raysville Marina (Leon Buffington and Doug Pentecost), (706) 595-5582 -- Happy New Year to all our friends.

Capt. David Willard, U.S. Coast Guard-licensed full-time professional fishing guide specializing in hybrids and stripers and trophy largemouth bass. (Boat phone: (706) 214-0236. (803) 637-6379 (www.crockettrocket striperfishing.com ) -- It's been tough because of the frigid water, 44 to 49 degrees. The further you go back in the creeks, the colder it gets. I found fish like hybrids, stripers, largemouth bass and white perch on the bottom in 50 feet of water. The bite is slow. You have to be patient. The best time to go is mid-afternoon on when the water warms up a bit. I've been looking for that global warming, but haven't found any lately. Happy New Year!

Ralph Barbee, professional guide specializing in hybrids, stripers and bass. (706) 860-7373 -- Michael Peterson, 17, and I fished the Raysville area on Wednesday. We caught five bass on the Yellow Fellow. The fish weighed about 4 pounds each. The bite was slow in 40-degree water, and all came in shallow water. Michael had a big fish on, but the hooks on the deep Wee R were too small and it escaped.

I wish all my friends a Happy New Year.

Fulltime professional guides Capts. William Sasser and Mark Crawford share their expertise at catching hybrids and stripers on my new TV show airs Saturday.

Fishing with Ralph Barbee airs Saturdays at 11 a.m., and Sundays at 1:30 p.m. on Comcast Ch. 21, My12TV, Knology Ch. 7, G-Force (Aiken) Ch. 7 and Northland Ch. 9 (Fort Gordon).
