THE germs found in the Chandlers' kitchen come from lots of different places.

Most are not harmful in themselves, but they will cause problems if they come into contact with food.

The last place you want them is in your kitchen.

If any of these bugs are found in your kitchen, you need to think about sharpening up the cleaning.

You only have to eat about ten of the bugs to be very, very ill.

If something looks clean, it doesn't necessarily mean it is.

Changing cloths, mops and buckets regularly is important otherwise you might just be spreading the bugs around - and make sure you wash your hands.

Disposable paper cloths are good instead of tea-towels, which can easily spread infection.

To see what germs lurk in an average family kitchen we visited Daniel Chandler, 25, and his wife Shelley, 23, who live in Portsmouth with their three kids, Mya, five, Daniel Jnr, two, and ten-month-old Dylan.

While cleanliness is a priority with such a young family, housewife Shelley tries to devote time to the kids while Daniel is out at work as a removal man.

She says: "Ours is a typical family kitchen. We try to keep it clean and tidy, but with three little ones running around you'll never get rid of all the dirt.

"Every morning I wipe the worktops, mop the floor and put on the dishwasher.

"Rather than scrub for hours I do the bare essentials and then blitz the house with a major clean at the weekend.

Ok, I am a forty-something woman considered by most people who know me to be reasonably intelligent. As a Registered Nurse I am well trained to deal with most any type of crisis. Heart Attacks no problem, I can do CPR. Need IV medications, you got it. Spider bite, I can take care of it all by myself. (as long as the spider is long gone) I can calculate drug dosages, can tell you most drugs and their various names and I am sure I have some other fine qualities too. But, the good Lord help me, I just can not change a toilet seat without a whole lot of help.

My woes started about three weeks ago. I live in a typical three bedroom two bath home. One morning I got out of bed, padded into the back bathroom half asleep and found that I was standing in water. I screamed like a banshee and my husband came running brandishing a tennis shoe and looking for a spider, I usually only scream when I am confronted with the eight legged fiends of which my nightmares are made. He was confused when there seemed to be nothing for me to be ranting about.

I frantically pointed to the puddle of water I was standing in and sloshed my feet in it for good measure. My hubby, who can fix anything, merely scratched his head and stated "Looks like the toilet is leaking."

"You mean I am standing in TOILET WATER!" In one swift move I had my jammies off and jumped into the shower, because everyone knows shower water is clean and toilet water is, well toilet water.

Fast forward a couple of days. My honey had decided that fixing the back toilet will have to wait. That toilet is shut off out of commission and we are now a one toilet family. Oh joy.

Now one might think that because our two boys are grown and married that the two of us would be fine with just the one toilet. Oh, but you would be so wrong! As most parents of grown children know they are never really gone. As it turns out we are very blessed and both our boys and their families live close by. That means they are here a lot and by a lot I mean they are here every time the dinner bell rings. The one toilet is getting double the use with the waiting line getting longer and longer.

On this particular evening everyone was here to eat and watch the latest DVD movie I picked up earlier that day. Our two granddaughters were with us and both of them are at that special age where "potty training" has begun.
