Haunting reality of alcohol confronts community

In a central space in Binjari, 15 kilometres from Katherine, symbolic gravesites have been put on display to represent 10 people who died through alcohol related causes over the past eight years.

With a painted banner behind reading "Grog Finished Ten", and bodies made out of used beer cans resting on top of each, the graves were intended to highlight the sobering reality of the consequences of alcoholism.

"Day time it's alright but night time it all change - you got drunks walking round everywhere screaming fighting, all the night till four or five in the morning, kids don't get to sleep, few kids miss school," local man Lachlan Raymond said.

Health worker Alex Jackson helped the community take this bold step, with hopes the imagery sent a clear message to the drinkers.

"I think a visual reminder of what alcohol and drugs does to a community is sometimes needed, even though it is confronting and there are obviously cultural sensitivities around that," she said.

The graves represent people who still have family living in the community and community chairwoman Barbara is aware this makes it all the more confronting. Even so, she believes the message needs to be loud and clear.

"They might end up coming back and having a go at us and telling us that we're mocking our own people that passed away during this time - I think we might have a bit of a problem with the alcohol ones," she said.

For a population of only 150, the loss of ten lives through alcohol has had a profound effect on the community's spirit.

"We had a very rough time here earlier this year you know with all this happening - we worrying about them too, we not running them down or whatever, we want our mob to grow their kids up, they leave their kids here wandering and they go off on the town drinking - they want to kill themselves through alcohol," Barbara said.

"But we want to try and advocate them to stop drinking and start realising we got a community to look after, their kids too you know."

To continue their fight for an alcohol and violence-free zone, community members are now looking at establishing a night patrol to liaise with police. They hope it will deter people from drinking in the community or returning to their homes drunk, where the violence so often starts.

"We sober people gotta try and go and stop them from fighting with one another, it's really hard - I don't know how we gonna stop them.

Below is a snapshot of what I have gleaned from Internet so far, and please add your own input(s): 100% agreed. Illegal immigrants do not have any rights/privileges. But they are bold, turn up in thousands on the street and protest for their (non-existing) rights. We can take a cue from the illgeal immigrants. All it comes down to is unity and putting forth a collective voice so that grievances of legal immigrants could be heard by the polticians. Please refrain from fighting on EB3 and EB2 issue. We all know how difficult retrogression has been to every one here. As some one has already said, If interfiling was so easy and every one was fortunate enough to file another Labor/140, EB-2 would have been in 2002 or along with EB-3. AFAIK, Interfiling is some thing the law allows and as long as one does what the system allows and is not gaming the system, its perfectly fine. Don't rub salt on others wounds. Do what you can to improve the system. IMO, the backward movement was a knee jerk reaction to the false demand, shown by USCIS with a huge movement in PD. As you may know, this is purely demand and supply based DOS will move dates forward as soon as they realize that there is not much demand. DOS keeps track of all visa number requests and approvals based on PD's. The problem is DOS just does not know how many applications are pending per country per category to stop the back and forth movement of dates and make the date movement strictly forward. DOS clearly made this a requirement in OCT 08 bulletin and lets see what happens in the next few months.
