Attention Junie B. Jones fans: Her newest book is “Junie B’s These Puzzles Hurt My Brain! Book.”
The book contains more than 200 games and activities, including mazes, word searches, scramblers, crosswords and secret codes. All of them are based on Junie B. Jones or events from her books.
For example, there’s a matching game that involves Junie B.’s shoes, “Pat” and “Leather;” a dot-to-dot about Lucille’s grandma’s “Cattle Act;” a word scrambler about the animal that Junie fears at the field trip to the farm; and even a word search puzzle about what you shouldn’t kick before a kickball tournament.
On every page, author Barbara Park includes a paragraph to help readers connect the activity to Junie B. Jones’ life. For readers who know the Junie B. Jones books, the descriptions will bring back memories. For kids who haven’t read the books, it’s a fun introduction to Junie’s personality and her one-of-a-kind perspective.
Yet there’s another element that makes the book unique. Author Barbara Park slips in creative writing activities wherever possible. Sometimes, the activity asks readers to make a word list that will be used to create a funny story.
Other times, she provides a framework for a story and encourages kids to finish the sentences. She even includes a cinquain writing game — based on the poetry that Mr. Scary asks Junie’s first grade class to write.
Obviously, “These Puzzles Hurt My Brain!” is not a chapter book like the other books in the Junie B. Jones series. But as the activities follow the course of her kindergarten and first grade school years, the book flows easily from beginning to end.
Barbara Park is the author of more than 27 books about Junie B. Jones. She has also written several middle grade novels, including “Skinnybones” and “Mick Harte Was Here.”

This secret is special however because in addition to the image, it shows a series of dots below the image. Clues have been provided to suggest that the dots at the bottom of this image are actually binary code (dot = 1, space = 0).
Sure, we have puzzle books, dot-to-dots, and Mad Libs, but the fun in these will wear out fast. I'm also armed with quite a few camp songs to entertain the crew, but we all have to be in the right mood for those (especially the sometimes-cranky driver)
