Califon, Clinton shops use Facebook to market themselves

Some local business people are using Facebook to good advantage. They reach out and find more and more people to “like” them. When friends recommend their friends, a network is created. Facebook is a mechanism that promotes referrals.

“You cannot ignore the web anymore,” said Annie Rossi. She runs the Addicted Jeans Store on Main Street in Clinton. She maintains her own web site (AddictedJeansStore.com), a blog (AddictedJeansStore.blogspot.com), and an active presence on Facebook.

“The computer scene was (getting popular) back in the 1990s,” Rossi added. “And I was always enamored with clothes and fashion.” Her mother, Mary Kayler, had a shop called Added Touches By Mary. Rossi joined her and expanded into the building’s three floors.

The Addicted operation offers dozens of brands of jeans for men and women. Jeans come in a bewildering variety —low- to high-rise, boot-cut or flare, straight legs, skimmies and jegging to ’70s bellbottoms.

“We are stylists and professional jeans fitting experts,” Rossi continued. “Jeans come in all different sizes and for all different body shapes. Customers say they have so much trouble finding the right fit, but we do alterations with our own seamstress. The most popular brand here is Free People.”

It’s not all jeans at Addicted. Shoppers find dresses, tops, purses, jewelry, and much more there to dress up , or down, all in the latest fashions.

She finds Facebook to be a convenient place to post events and send out alerts to “friends” far and near. She shows them new fashions she frequently finds at the international fashion trade shows in New York City. People who become followers of her blog get notified when new postings are made.

Carol Lamperti uses a similar approach at her Califon Consignment Boutique. She targets business and professional women and women in general with fashionable clothing, shoes, handbags, jewelry, and accessories. This shop is all about today’s wardrobe for women.

“I like to put pictures out every day to be in everyone’s news feeds,” Lamperti said. “I e-mail direct to customers —sometimes doing mobile uploads from the phone.”

Facebook regularly attracts new customers to her shop, not just locally, but from far afield. She is finding that women are willing to travel some distance to see in person what they have seen on the net (CalifonConsignmentBoutique.com, 908-832-9030). She changes her windows as many as three times each week. “And I put merchandise out on the sidewalk,” she added. This attracts attention and it keeps her in the minds of people passing by. It is important to maintain a fresh look, she explained.
