Boom time eludes small Benicia port missing recovery
Riding waves of the economy's tenuous recovery, more ships loaded with cargo are stopping at California and nationwide ports, according to a new report from the U.S. Maritime Administration.A 13 percent increase in ship stops, also known as vessel calls, in 2010 indicates a healthier economy and also more jobs in the maritime industry, officials said.
"There's a big increase in ports of calls and in shipping in the ports," said James Dalske, California Maritime Academy director in the office career development and industrial relations, the campus office which helps graduates find jobs.
Many ports, including the Port of Oakland, saw a rebound in 2010 after a steep decline the previous year.
The increase in vessel calls reflects waterborne trade between the United States and other countries, and is also a measure of imports, exports and other shipments, according to the Department of Transportation.
But while large ports are seeing a boost in the number of ships stopping, the Port of Benicia has bucked that trend. It has experienced a steep decline in business, particularly this year, said Jim Triplett, senior vice president of operations for Amports, the firm which runs the West Coast's only privately owned port in the Benicia Industrial Park.
The Benicia port primarily imports Toyota vehicles built in Japan but it also exports some petroleum coke, an oil refinery byproduct, produced by its neighbor, Valero Refinery, Triplett said.
The massive March 11 earthquake in Japan struck a blow, plummeting Benicia port business by as much as 60 percent, Triplett said.
"It's been a very major hit but we do anticipate more productive months ahead," Triplett said.
The earthquake struck while the port was still recovering from a harsh economy, which resulted in fewer people buying new vehicles, he said.
Triplett said the DOT's data is valid, but it only paints part of the picture. He said small ports are not enjoying the same increases in business as large ones.
At the Port of Oakland, one of the largest on the West Coast, vessel calls saw a 14 percent increase last year, director of external affairs Isaac Kos-Read said.
However, that increase still does not make up entirely the sharp decline felt in 2009, Kos-Read said.
A better economic indicator, Kos-Read said, is not the number of ships stopping at ports but the amount of cargo the vessels carry.

Q&A: Now a earthquake hit California, are these recent earthquakes ...
Oh for goodness sake…
What are you going to do when you’re inevitably proved wrong? You expect us to start panicking utterly, begging Jesus for forgiveness 24/7, and then, when nothing happens what are you going to say? “Whoops, sorry – but it’s gonna happen soon! Any day now! We’ve been waiting 2000 years, but it’s definitely going to happen shortly!”
Jesus’ prophecy in Matthew chapter 24 is best understood using the illustration He gave: that wars, rumours of wars, famines and earthquakes in various places “are the beginning of birth-pains”. If you’ve ever had a baby, you will know that the first twinges of labour start off mild but very short, and often with long time-gaps inbetween. It takes many hours for them to become severe and lengthy. Bear in mind that Jesus also said that wars etc must happen “but the end is still to come.” Keep your eyes peeled, but don’t hold your breath waiting for the next bout!
No earthquake has hit california that I’m aware of… and I would be aware of… but yes earthquakes are part of the prophecy about how things would be in the last days. To dismiss that fact by simply saying that earthquakes or wars or famine have always taken place is to blind oneself to the truth. If you look at that prophecy, the Apostles asked about a SIGN… singular, not signs. Meaning ALL those things Jesus listed would be happening during the same time period. Secular historians will say that the world entered a new phase after 1914… a time of unprecedented trouble or WOE. Not coincidentally, Revelation 12 (I can’t remember the verse) says Satan’s being cast out of heaven meant WOE for the earth. We’re seeing that today.
No.
There were 18 7.0 or above earthquakes in the world in 1990:

3 in the a few days at the end of August.
The recent CA and Peru earthquakes would not even make this list.
In 1980, a year I picked at random, there were 1405 magnitude 5.
